Why Leadership Development Efforts Fail

According to a recent McKinsey Quarterly article, U.S. companies spend almost $14 billion annually on nurturing leaders. Here are two of the most common reasons their initiatives don't deliver desired results:

  • Overlooking context. A one-size-fits-all approach to leadership training doesn't work. To succeed, development efforts must be tailored -- equipping a leader with a small number of competencies critical to success in his specific role.
  • Underestimating mind-sets. Successful leadership training first addresses the deepest thoughts, feelings and assumptions that underlie leadership behavior -- and supports the mind shift necessary to foster lasting improvement.
