When employees underperform, it's often due to a skill gap or a will gap. While you can close a skill gap with coaching, training and support, a will gap is more difficult to remedy. Take the time to understand your employee’s lack of motivation. Do they understand how their work fits into the big picture? Is there something blocking them? It's your job as a leader to find out, and then do what's necessary to improve the employee's engagement and motivation.
